Cats have been humans’ companion for thousands of years, and their popularity isn’t going away.
For families with limited resources, or people who live in cities, cats seem to be the perfect pet to occupy their homes and hearts. For many, owning a cat is the first pet they’ve had that requires a large amount of responsibility.
Just like with dogs, not all cats are created equal, and some breeds are much easier to work with than others. If you’re thinking of bringing a cat into your life for the first time, consider adopting one of the following cat breeds known for being suitable for new cat owners.
Maine Coon – This breed is thought to be the oldest American cat breed. They’re known for being extra friendly and very social. Because of their social and mild temperament, Maine Coons are repeatedly recommended for families who have never owned a cat before, or who are looking to add a cat to a home that already has another animal.
The only detail to keep in mind? Maine Coons have long hair that will need special grooming attention.
Siamese – On the other end of the grooming scale is the Siamese. These cats are known for being low maintenance because of their short hair. They’re also known for being very friendly, curious and playful. This breed will bring laughter and delight to any house, especially active households, or ones with children.
American Shorthair – If you’re not hung up on getting a cat with pedigree, consider the American Shorthair. They come in a wide variety of colors, and make up over 90% of domestic cats. Temperaments vary from cat to cat, but asking a shelter for a cat with a calm, even temperament will guarantee that you come home with the perfect no fuss cat.
Scottish Fold – Best known for their uniquely shaped ears, Scottish Folds are notorious for being curious and loyal. They love being around their family members, and love playing complex games. They make a great first cat for homes with big hearts, and though they are famous for their mutated ear gene, we love them all the more for it!
Sphynx – This breed is known for being popular with cat owners who are typically allergic to cat fur. They don’t shed, which is a huge plus for grooming and clean up, but on top of that, they’re also known for being one of the most affectionate cat breeds out there. They love nothing more than to snuggle with their owners.
Ragdoll – If your family has other pets or children, Ragdolls are your match. They’re well known for getting along splendidly with animals that are already in your home, as well as young children. As long as they’re not pulled or tugged, they’ll affectionately insert themselves into any situation you may toss their way.
Exotic Shorthair – This breed looks exactly like the Persian, but doesn’t require any of the daunting grooming habits. It has all the benefits of a beloved breed without any of the cost and time-consuming negatives that come with its upkeep. Plus, exotic shorthairs tend to be spunkier than the Persian, a great plus for someone new to cats.
